CAFES (Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability) Ottawa, ON
CAFES (Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability) is a network of local environmental and climate leaders in the city of Ottawa. CAFES was founded in 2010 and federally incorporated as a non-profit in 2021. Our network includes over 250 individual and organizational representatives from across 20 wards and over 50 neighbourhoods. Our organizational members are urban, suburban and rural community associations, environmental organizations and citizens’ groups. Our individual members are citizens who are active in their communities and concerned with living in ecological balance. The mission of CAFES is to create and safeguard a more healthy, resilient and livable city by means of local action, advocacy and community building. CAFES monitors municipal environmental policy and frequently delivers public delegations, letters and research reports to the City on topics such as renewable energy, stormwater management, tree canopy, zoning, waste, transportation, and more. We host three Caucus groups in the areas of Climate, Trees and Greenspace, and Waste and Circular Economy, where members and volunteers meet to discuss current issues and projects. We facilitate local environmental projects and community building events, including an annual tree sapling give-away and community tree plant. In 2023, CAFES organized a climate dialogue workshop series to gather input on the City’s Climate Resiliency Strategy. Email [email protected] to see how you can get involved. Any individuals interested in sustainability are welcome to get involved as a volunteer or member. Local environmental organizations or community associations are welcome to inquire about memberships. CAFES aims to represent rural, suburban and urban locations and prioritize demographic diversity.Last Updated: 02-04-2024

Centretown NeighbourWoods Ottawa, ON
Centretown NeighbourWoods is a community-based tree inventory, monitoring and stewardship program. NeighbourWoods is designed to help community groups and volunteers conduct an inventory of their urban forest and use that information to inform urban forest stewardship in their communities and neighbourhoods. NeighbourWoods is also an exciting way of being active, interacting with the people in your community and learning all about the trees close to where you live. The Centretown NeighbourWoods team was formed in 2021 to promote actions that protect and enhance the urban tree canopy within Centretown and beyond. These efforts will help mitigate local impacts of climate change. Team volunteers apply a tested citizen science methodology to conduct tree surveys on private residential land, industrial/commercial land, and public lands. This baseline will help inform future tree stewardship practices and initiatives in Centretown. Volunteers usually meet once a week throughout the summer to systematically collect data on Centretown trees with their team members. Each team selects the dates and times that suit their availability. We also aim to increase understanding of the value of trees in our community and advocate for planting more trees to help decrease the heat island effect. If you would like to join, please reach out to [email protected] and we will happily connect you with a team. Anyone can participate in our activities! Data collection is done outside and usually takes place on private properties with the consent of the resident. We go from door to door, speak to residents, and then measure the trees on their property and collect data using an app.Last Updated: 24-04-2024
